This year we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our centre. At the festive service, my colleagues surprised me with words of appreciation and a gift to mark my 25 years as a pastor. What has not changed in this quarter of a century. I can still remember looking into the service hall for the first time. Old wooden benches, heavy curtains, a massive pulpit and an organ were revealed to my eyes. To be honest, my emotional world collapsed in a matter of seconds at the sight. I immediately realised that I had landed in a place that wasn't very innovative or dynamic. And I - I had left the training centre with the ambition to be something special and had the ambition to achieve something great in a modern church. My consolation at the time was that I would only be here for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am still blushing as I write these lines today, even though I have long since turned back and asked God for forgiveness. How arrogant and proud was that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eight years later, after my time in regional youth work, I was asked if I would come back to Chrischona Seon as a pastor. At the time, it seemed impossible to me. The anticipation of a new challenge in a different place was too great. But then a miracle happened. In a \"normal as a dog\" church service on 13 August 2006 (I still remember where I was sitting), I experienced a clear revelation from God. He filled my heart with a huge portion of love for this church, so that the enquiry became a calling for me. This love continues to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, I know that it is not outward appearances or modernity that make up the quality of a church; it should be love for one another: \"So now I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. Your love for one another will show the world that you are my disciples<\/em>\" (John 13:34).<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the same time, this love for one another is also a prerequisite for change in a church.
