He is to announce God's punishment to the hostile Assyrians. Jonah knows that God is merciful and fears that he will spare the hated Assyrians if they turn from their evil ways as a result of Jonah's warning. Without further ado, Jonah disregards God's instruction and sails in the opposite direction. But the ship is in distress and Jonah has to fight for his life.
