Recently, someone from another independent church in the region \u2013 one of roughly the same size \u2013 attended a service with us. As she is responsible for marriage and relationships ministry at her church, I told her that, in addition to the marriage course, we are running the \u00abLove, Fail, Live\u00bb course for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During our conversation, it emerged that there was hardly any need for such a course in her church. Why is the situation so different here? Presumably, it is marriages that have already broken down or are on the verge of falling apart that preoccupy me most. They are what trouble me the most, tear my heart apart and drive me to prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fundamentally, I see it as a hallmark of the seetal chile that people whose lives have been disrupted find acceptance and healing with us. For one thing is clear: when a marriage breaks down, two people are left behind who have suffered greatly and carry deep emotional wounds. Such people should experience mercy, not judgement, within the Christian community. I am delighted that divorced or separated people enjoy being with us. A very warm welcome to you all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, I do have one slight concern: could it be that the mere fact that quite a number of separated couples are part of a community creates a certain sense of normality \u2013 and gives married people the impression that this is always a viable option when difficulties arise? (However, this idea only really takes hold if someone is unaware of just how much pain is associated with a separation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is very important to me that separation within a marriage never becomes the norm. Before God, marriage is a sacred covenant to which He Himself is a witness (Malachi 2:14\u201316). Separation should therefore not be an option for married couples. It is always worth fighting for your marriage. We are happy to offer every conceivable form of support to help with this (marriage courses, 2gathering, pre-marriage preparation, marriage counselling).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yes, it is a sad fact \u2013 due to the nature of this world \u2013 that there are situations in which it is better for a marriage to break down than for one of the spouses to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We therefore wish to be a supportive and healing church both for married couples and for those whose marriages have broken down.
