I have now been here in the Middle East for 6 weeks. And I can happily tell you: I'm doing well and I'm in the right place. Although everything here is new to me, my culture shock has so far been limited. Nevertheless, I realise that even the simplest things like shopping or meeting people can exhaust me. However, most of my energy and time goes into learning the language. I meet with my language teacher every day and then prepare for my next Kurdish lesson. This is intensive, but absolutely necessary. It's the only way I can immerse myself in the culture, understand the challenges of the local people and have in-depth conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I really enjoy the fact that we can work together as a team here. Part of our work is focussed on helping families in poorer settlements. This includes home visits and distributing food. However, our aim is not just to give, but also to provide people with targeted support and encouragement, be it through nutrition courses, tooth brushing courses or similar, and to share hope with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What always moves me deeply is the large number of unreached people here. I am in Mesopotamia, where the Euphrates and Tigris rivers flow. The land where Abraham and the prophet Nahum came from. In Acts 2:8-9 it says: \"Then why do we each hear them in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and we inhabitants of Mesopotamia.\"<\/em> It could well be that Kurds were among the first believers at Pentecost.
